 1. Background

The current global financial crisis has hit countries hard throughout the world. It presents huge challenges to governments, central banks and academic researchers worldwide. It is imperative to understand fully the causes and consequences of the crisis and to design swift and affirmative policies to stop it. Many questions need to be answered to facilitate effective policy actions, for example:

    • What are the main causes of the crisis?

    • Why is this crisis different from other crises (regional or global) in the past?

    • What are the consequences of the crisis on various economies, including the US, Japan, Europe, China and the rest of the world?

    • What has been done (e.g. monetary and fiscal policies) to prevent more failures of large banks, car manufacturers and other corporations? Are these methods effective and, if not, what else can be done?

    • What are the implications of the crisis on international trade and investment?

   • What are the implications for China and other developing countries?

These questions will be addressed at the 2nd GEP Conference at the University of Nottingham, Ningbo, China, which will be organised by GEP in conjunction with: the School of Contemporary China, University of Nottingham; the China Centre for Economic Studies, Fudan University; and the College of Public Administration, Zhejiang University. This Conference follows the success of GEP’s Inaugural Conference held at the University of Nottingham, Ningbo, in November 2008.
